The Sounding of Retreat has its origins in the 16th Century, an ancient tradition that lives on today. The Retreat featured on this recording is performed by the Massed Bands and Bugles of the Light Division. The Light Division traces its origins to the 18th century when ‘Light Companies’ were formed to move at speed over inhospitable terrain and protect the main forces by skirmishing tactics.

Orders on the battlefield were communicated by bugle calls. The Light Division today traditionally marches at a fast speed  and still uses the distinctive sound of the silver bugle. The complex high speed marching display represented here at London’s Horse Guards Parade is among the most exciting sights and sounds to be seen and heard in the world of military music.
